The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’s main narrative will reportedly be about the government not wanting Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) to be the next Captain America. Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the upcoming Disney Plus series will put the focus on Steve Rogers’ (Steve Rogers) closest friends as they team up against Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) - the mastermind behind the events of Captain America: Civil War.

After accomplishing his final mission to return all the Infinity Stones in their original locations, old man Steve returns to the primary MCU timeline to hand out the shield to Sam - effectively passing the mantle as Captain America. This will be the narrative jumping point for Marvel Studios inaugural TV show, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Kevin Feige revealed some key information regarding the project in his Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, but some new details about the show has apparently come to light.

In the latest Fatman Beyond episode, hosts Kevin Smith and Marc Bernadin discuss MCU’s Phase 4 slate as announced at Comic-Con, including The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Smith pondered about whether or not Sam will eventually assume the Captain America persona, to which Bernadin replies: “That, I think, is the crux of what that show’s going to be. The government doesn’t want Sam Wilson to be Captain America.” He, however, did not confirm his source for this information so it’s best to take it with a healthy dose of salt.

While Bernadin’s intel is unsubstantiated at this point, the idea posed by Smith about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier revealing Sam becoming Captain America is very much plausible. In a recent interview, Mackie explains the logic behind the title of the show considering that technically, he’s already supposed to be called the Star Spangled Avenger. The actor reveal that he’s still Falcon, meaning that chances are that the show will tackle his evolution to become worthy of the iconic shield that Steve wielded for years. And if it’s that not difficult enough for him, the threat of Zemo haunting him and Bucky (Sebastian Stan), not to mention friction with the government makes for a rigorous process for him to earn the mantle.

Assuming that the reported involvement of the government in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier comes to fruition, it will be interesting to see how the organization (at least the United States’ iteration) rebuilds itself  after the devastating aftermath of Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) snap in Avengers: Infinity War, as well as technically its resolution in Endgame. Based on the MCU canon, it doesn’t make sense that they have any issues with Sam being the next Captain America considering his history in the army - a common ground for him and Steve. If anything, Bucky being the next one to assume the mantle better fits this premise given his previous ties to HYDRA.
